Mark Hanson has been moving Dallas County forward for over two decades as a Dallas County Supervisor. He has worked to keep taxes low while providing quality services for one of the fastest growing and best managed counties in the nation.
Mark’s common-sense approach ensures a promising future for the next generation. He will work to strengthen our economy, schools, safety, and quality of life.
Mark will work to lower taxes and prioritize economic opportunities. As a board member of Greater Dallas County Development Alliance, he is committed to policies that create jobs, attract new businesses and make Iowa more competitive.
Mark believes education is the bedrock of our communities and the cornerstone of a thriving economy. As a parent and the son of educators, he will work to ensure schools are strong, teachers are valued, and students have safe learning environments.
Mark stands behind the men and women in law enforcement who keep our families and communities safe. He will also work to improve access to health care, mental and behaviorial health services, and support for Iowa seniors.
As a Waukee resident for more than 24 years, Mark believes in strong communities, safe neighborhoods and ensuring Iowa is the best place to live, work, and raise a family. He worked to realize the Raccoon River Valley and High Trestle bike trails, and as the former chair of the North Raccoon River Watershed, he led efforts to protect our waterways and natural resources.
For the last 20 years, I have been proud to serve on the Dallas County Board of Supervisors and help lead our county through such an extraordinary period of growth and watch Dallas County become one of the fastest growing and best managed counties in the country.
During my time on the Dallas County Board of Supervisors, the county property tax rate has remained among the lowest in the state. I helped oversee the construction of the Dallas County Law Enforcement Center to ensure law enforcement had the facilities and resources necessary to protect the resident of the county. Additionally, the Dallas County Administration Building is set to open this fall to provide services to the rapidly expanding population of Dallas County.
I am excited to take this next step to serve and take the same principles that put Dallas County in a position to grow and succeed and apply them to state government. This area will benefit from a principled approach to growth, tax reform, education, and a pro-law enforcement voice in the Iowa Senate.
Becoming a resident of Dallas County in 2000, I have served on the Dallas County Board of Supervisors since 2004. Prior to being elected County Supervisor, I served as Vice President of Membership for the Iowa Association of Business and Industry; Executive Director, Director of Government Relations and Grants Administrator for the Iowa Association of Area Agency on Aging; and Association Account Executive with Smith Bucklin in Chicago and Los Angeles.
As a community advocate with a heart for public service, I serve on the boards of the Metropolitan Planning Organization, Greater Dallas County Development Alliance, Dallas County Historical Preservation Commission, New Opportunities, and the Central Iowa Workforce Development Board. I am also a member of Lutheran Church of Hope, serving as a Hope Kids Youth Leader since 2004.
I graduated cum laude from Minnesota State University at Mankato with a bachelor’s degree and also earned a Certified Association Executive (CAE) certification from the American Society of Association Executives.
I grew up in Rosemount, Minnesota, a small town just 15 miles south of the Twin Cities, where I attended public schools in the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan District. My dad was the district’s school superintendent and my mom a school librarian. Naturally, quality public education has long been a priority of my family.
My Iowa connection began when I met my wife, an Iowa native and Dallas Center-Grimes school alum. We met while living in California but chose to build a life in Iowa because of the great public schools, safe communities, strong economic opportunities and exceptional quality of life.
As residents of Waukee since 2000, we are the proud parents of two adult sons who attended and graduated from the Waukee Community School District.
